At Poulton-le-Sands, we recognise that every child is unique, and we use a range of ongoing assessments to understand each pupil’s progress, celebrate their achievements, and identify areas where additional support may be needed. By combining teacher observations, formative assessments, and regular testing—both formal and informal—we provide personalised feedback and guidance for every learner. Assessment also informs our planning, enabling teachers to tailor lessons that challenge and support all pupils, while keeping parents fully informed of their child’s development.

Schools are required to administer a series of statutory tests:

• In Reception, children complete a baseline assessment typically within the first 6 weeks of starting school in September
• In Year 1, children are assessed using the Phonics Screening Test in June
• In Year 4, children are assessed through an online multiplication assessment in June
• In Year 6, children are assessed through the Statutory Assessment Tests (SATs) in May. The tests cover
  • English: reading and spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • Mathematics: arithmetic and reasoning
  • Writing is not formally assessed through a test – this is through teacher assessment

It is very important that children are present for these assessments and therefore, no leave of absence will be permitted during these dates.

Test results provide only a snapshot of a child’s achievements. Your child’s annual report, sent at the end of the summer term, offers a fuller picture, highlighting their strengths, progress, effort and the next steps for improvement.

We also provide formal opportunities to meet with class teachers in the autumn and spring terms to discuss your child’s behaviour, academic progress and future learning goals.

If your child has additional SEND support, there are opportunities to meet with the SEND Coordinator and their class teacher in autumn and spring terms to discuss your child’s progress towards their IPP.

At any time, you are welcome to make an appointment to speak with the class teacher, SEND Coordinator, a senior leader or the Headteacher if you have questions or concerns.
