The Government’s PE & Sport Premium is additional funding provided to primary schools to help them make sustainable improvements to the quality of Physical Education, school sport and physical activity (PESSPA) beyond what can be achieved through core budgets.

Now in its twelfth year, the Primary PE & Sport Premium supports schools to:

  • Ensure equitable access to high-quality PE and sport provision
  • Encourage all pupils to be active for at least 60 minutes a day
  • Deliver a minimum of two hours of high-quality PE each week for every pupil

How Should Premium Funding Be Used?

PE & Sport Premium funding should be used to achieve at least one of the following:

• Make additional and sustainable improvements to the PE, sport and physical activity provision within school.
• Provide or improve equal access to sport for both boys and girls.
• Ensure teachers have the skills, knowledge and confidence to deliver high-quality, well-structured PE, with continued professional development prioritised where needed.

Further information can be found on the Government’s website and on the Youth Sport Trust website.

How Do We Use the PE & Sport Premium?

At Poulton-le-Sands CE Primary School, we recognise our central role in supporting all children to lead healthy, active lifestyles. We aim to lay firm foundations so that children develop positive attitudes towards healthy living and enjoy regular physical activity throughout their lives.

We are committed to ensuring that:

  • All children receive two hours of high-quality PE each week, delivered by confident and well-trained staff.
  • Pupils experience a broad range of sports and physical activities throughout the year.
  • Children take part in at least 55 minutes of physical activity daily during school time, supported by active playtimes and the Daily Mile.

Leaders at Poulton use the PE & Sport Premium to make additional and sustainable improvements to PESSPA by:

  • Funding high-quality PE and sport for a minimum of two hours per week, supplemented by a wide range of extracurricular and competitive sporting opportunities.
  • Providing and improving equal access to sport for all pupils, including both boys and girls.
  • Increasing participation in PESSPA so that all pupils develop healthy lifestyles and achieve the performance levels they are capable of.
  • Building capacity and capability to ensure that improvements made today are sustainable and continue to benefit pupils joining Poulton in future years.

When writing our PE & Sport Premium Plan, we review our actions carefully against the Government’s five key indicators and the DfE’s recommendations for effective use of the PE & Sport Premium.
