Writing

This year at Poulton, we have adopted the “I Am A Clever Writer” approach for our writing lessons. This is a skills-based, carefully sequenced approach and fully aligned with the new Writing Framework (2025). Writing is taught through clearly identified skills, ensuring children build confidence, accuracy, and independence as writers across all subjects.

Teaching begins with Assessment for Learning (AfL) to identify which writing skills need to be consolidated and which new skills should be introduced, using our Progression of Skills document to ensure consistent progress. Teachers then select the most appropriate genre to teach these skills, supported by high-quality stimuli and meaningful curriculum links wherever possible. Most writing sequences are concise and purposeful, typically lasting no longer than one week.

A key feature of our approach is the use of a WAGOLL (What A Good One Looks Like). Teachers create and share a high-quality model text that clearly demonstrates the new skill alongside previously taught skills. This shared outcome is revisited daily and includes ambitious vocabulary and visual support to reduce cognitive load and clarify expectations.

To support independence, new skills are added to a Clever Writer Checklist, which is displayed in classrooms and built upon throughout the year. This checklist empowers children by making success criteria explicit and transferable, ensuring high standards of writing are maintained across English and wider curriculum subjects such as science and RE.

New skills are explicitly taught and modelled through sentences linked to the WAGOLL, with interactive Working Walls developed through class discussion. These walls support vocabulary development, sentence construction, and accurate application of skills. Children initially practise new skills in isolation before embedding them through daily writing opportunities.

Live marking plays a vital role in assessment, enabling immediate feedback, the correction of misconceptions, and celebration of effective writing. As skills are embedded, children write daily, including regular independent writing opportunities where success criteria, working walls, and the Clever Writer Checklist support high-quality outcomes. The WAGOLL is removed during independent writing to encourage originality and independence.

Each sequence concludes with a Star Write, an extended, independent piece of writing where children recreate the WAGOLL, bringing together all taught skills. This provides valuable formative assessment that informs future planning.

Alongside composition, transcription skills are prioritised. Handwriting is taught explicitly, with a strong focus on accurate letter formation before fluency and joining. Spelling rules are carefully revisited through WAGOLLs, modelling, and live marking to ensure accountability and retention.

Our writing approach is underpinned by consistent monitoring and support from the Subject Lead and Senior Leadership Team, ensuring fidelity and high expectations across the school. Through this structured, evidence-informed approach, children develop the skills, confidence, and enjoyment needed to become successful writers.

Phonics, Reading and Spelling

Reading at Poulton-le-Sands is a crucial and vital part of our curriculum. We want to create a reading culture where the love of reading is central to everything we do. Reading unlocks the curriculum and the wider world for all and exposes them to a wide range of vocabulary.

We teach high quality phonics sessions in the EYFS and KS1 so that children are quickly able to decode words and make a flying start on their reading journey. We teach phonics systematically using ‘Supersonic Phonic Friends’. This means that we teach the sounds and letter combinations in a specific order. The children move through the phases set out in ‘Supersonic Phonic Friends’ as their phonetic knowledge develops. They start with firm foundations in phase 1 before moving onto basics 2 and 3 in Reception. They then move onto basics 4, higher level 5 choose to use spellings and higher level 5 switch it spell sounds in Year 1 and then Suze’s super spelling rules in Year 2. Daily lessons are 20 minutes in length and are lively and interactive with maximum participation from all children expected. They follow the following structure- revisit prior learning, practise a skill, teach new learning and apply the skill. Rigorous interventions are put in place as necessary, to help the children make rapid progress and ensure they catch up to keep up. Children in Year 1 take part in the national phonics screening test.

Our early reading books are phonetically decodable and link to the phonics phase that the children are working on. They are organised according to ‘Supersonic Phonic Friends’ and the phase and week the children are on within their phonic lessons. School staff regularly assess children to ensure they are reading at the right level and their books are matched to their phonetic knowledge. Children read fiction and nonfiction from published schemes such as the Oxford Reading Tree, Jelly and Bean, Pearson Bug Club and Supersonic Friends.

As children progress with their reading they can read across all genres and are able to choose books from an exciting range of authors and titles.

Starting in Year 2 and across KS2, we use a triangulated approach to reading: explicit teaching through collaborative reading, regular exposure to high-quality texts, and a strong focus on developing fluency skills. We also recognise the importance of talk and deliberately embed opportunities for structured discussion within lessons, whether through partner talk, whole-class discussion, or exploratory talk around texts.

We have plans afoot to redesign our reading challenge for children…watch this space!

Children read daily at home and we are extremely appreciative of our families who support their children in developing good reading habits. We are also very grateful to our reading helpers who volunteer in school to assist the children.

We have a wonderful school library that is stocked with a great selection of classic and new titles and a wide range of genres. All children use this weekly and are able to take books home to read for pleasure and explore which books they are interested in.
